Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) for polite requests and hypotheticals (würde, könnte, sollte)
B1What is Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II)?
Konjunktiv II is the German subjunctive used to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations, to soften statements, and to make polite requests. In English it often corresponds to would / could / should. In everyday German you will see two common ways to form it:
- synthetic forms (a changed stem with special endings): e.g. ich hätte (have → would have), ich wäre (be → would be), ich ginge (go → would go), ich fände (find → would find).
- the periphrastic form würde + infinitive: e.g. ich würde gehen (I would go). This form is very common and useful when the synthetic Konjunktiv II is identical to the simple past.
Three words you will use a lot in polite requests and hypotheticals are: würde (would), könnte (could), sollte (should).
When do I use Konjunktiv II?
Polite requests and offers
- Use Konjunktiv II (often of a modal verb) to make a request sound polite and less direct. Formal requests usually use Sie; informal requests use du.
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? — Could you please help me? (formal)
- Könntest du mir bitte helfen? — Could you please help me? (informal)
- Würden Sie das Fenster schließen? — Would you close the window, please?
- Ich möchte gern einen Kaffee. — I would like a coffee. (polite request)
Hypotheticals / unreal situations (conditionals)
- To talk about what would happen in an imaginary situation you use Konjunktiv II in the if-clause and the main clause. A very common pattern is: Wenn + Konjunktiv II, main clause with würde + infinitive (or Konjunktiv II).
- Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dir helfen. — If I had time, I would help you.
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. — If I were rich, I would buy a house.
- Ich würde kommen, aber ich muss arbeiten. — I would come, but I have to work.
Softening statements, suggestions and speculation
- Konjunktiv II softens statements (makes them less direct) and expresses possibility or mild recommendation.
- Das könnte funktionieren. — That could work.
- Du solltest mehr schlafen. — You should sleep more.
- Das würde mich nicht überraschen. — That wouldn't surprise me.
- Ich würde sagen, das ist eine gute Idee. — I would say that is a good idea.
How do I form Konjunktiv II? (würde, könnte, sollte)
There are two practical ways to form Konjunktiv II:
1) Synthetic forms (one-word subjunctives)
- Many strong (irregular) verbs have a distinct Konjunktiv-II form. Often the vowel is changed (and sometimes an umlaut is added) and endings are attached. Useful examples:
- sein → ich wäre, du wärest/wärest, er/sie/es wäre, wir wären, ihr wäret, sie wären. — I would be
- haben → ich hätte, du hättest, er hätte, wir hätten, ihr hättet, sie hätten. — I would have
- gehen → ich ginge, du gingest, er ginge, wir gingen, ihr ginget, sie gingen. — I would go
- sehen → ich sähe, du sähest, er sähe … — I would see
- finden → ich fände … — I would find
- Use these when they exist and are natural. But note a problem: for many weak (regular) verbs the Konjunktiv II looks identical to the simple past (Präteritum). Example: machen → ich machte (past) is the same as Konjunktiv II; this can cause ambiguity.
2) Periphrastic form: würde + infinitive (very common)
- To avoid ambiguity or when the synthetic form is rare, use würde + infinitive. This is the safe and widely used conditional form.
- Ich würde das machen. — I would do that.
- Er würde nicht kommen. — He would not come.
Modal verbs: special KII forms you should learn
- Modals have common Konjunktiv-II forms that are idiomatic in requests and hypotheticals. Learn these instead of always using würde + modal.
- können → ich könnte, du könntest, er könnte, wir könnten, ihr könntet, sie könnten — could
- sollen → ich sollte, du solltest … — should / ought to (mild recommendation)
- dürfen → ich dürfte … — might be allowed / would be allowed
- müssen → ich müsste … — would have to
- mögen → ich möchte … — would like (note: möchte is the Konjunktiv II of mögen and is used for polite wants)
- wollen → ich wollte — can be ambiguous (past vs conditional); often use möchte or würde gern + infinitive instead
Conjugation examples (short reference)
- würde: ich würde, du würdest, er/sie/es würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie/Sie würden
- könnte: ich könnte, du könntest, er/sie/es könnte, wir könnten, ihr könntet, sie könnten
- sollte: ich sollte, du solltest, er/sie/es sollte, wir sollten, ihr solltet, sie sollten
- möchte: ich möchte, du möchtest, er/sie/es möchte, wir möchten, ihr möchtet, sie möchten
Polite requests: patterns and many examples
Pattern: modal Konjunktiv II + pronoun + rest
- Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, wie spät es ist? — Could you please tell me the time? (formal)
- Könntest du mir kurz helfen? — Could you help me for a moment? (informal)
Pattern: Würden Sie / Würdest du + infinitive (polite with full verbs)
- Würden Sie mir Ihr Formular geben? — Would you give me your form, please?
- Würdest du das bitte aufheben? — Would you please pick that up?
Möchten for polite wants
- Ich möchte gern ein Glas Wasser. — I would like a glass of water.
- Möchten Sie noch etwas? — Would you like anything else? (formal)
Very polite / formal written formula (inversion): Sollten Sie ...
- Sollten Sie Fragen haben, rufen Sie uns bitte an. — Should you have any questions, please call us. (formal, often in letters or emails)
Hypotheticals and conditional sentences: many examples
Present/unreal now or future (If X were true now, Y would happen):
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. — If I were rich, I would buy a house.
- Wenn du mehr üben würdest, könntest du besser spielen. — If you practiced more, you could play better.
- Wenn er das wüsste, würde er anders handeln. — If he knew that, he would act differently.
Note about the wenn-clause: don’t use würde inside the wenn-clause
- Wrong: Wenn ich Zeit würde haben, würde ich kommen.
- Right: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. (or: Hätte ich Zeit, würde ich kommen.)
Unreal past (what would have happened): use hätte/wäre + Partizip II
- Wenn ich gestern Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen. — If I had had time yesterday, I would have come.
- Ich hätte das machen können. — I could have done that. (hätte + double infinitive is typical with modals)
- Du hättest früher anrufen sollen. — You should have called earlier.
Using könnte and sollte in conditionals and speculation
- Wir könnten morgen anfangen, wenn alle zustimmen. — We could start tomorrow if everyone agrees.
- Das sollte funktionieren, wenn du die Anleitung befolgst. — That should work if you follow the instructions.
- Es könnte sein, dass er krank ist. — It could be that he is ill.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using würde incorrectly inside the wenn-clause
- Wrong: Wenn ich reich würde sein... → Right: Wenn ich reich wäre...
- Tip: Use the simple Konjunktiv II (hätte, wäre, gäbe, etc.) in the wenn-clause or use inversion: Hätte ich Zeit, ...
- Using würde + past participle for past conditional (avoid this nonstandard form)
- Wrong: Ich würde gegangen sein. → Right: Ich wäre gegangen. or Ich hätte das gesagt.
- Tip: Use wäre/hätte + Partizip II for unreal past.
- Overusing würde instead of modal Konjunktiv II forms
- Less idiomatic: Ich würde das können. → Prefer: Ich könnte das.
- Note: Würde + modal is grammatically possible but usually sounds awkward; use the modal KII (könnte, sollte, müsste, dürfte) where appropriate.
- Confusing möchte and möchte with wollen
- Ich möchte (KII of mögen) = I would like (polite). Use statt ich will when you want to be polite.
- Forgetting word order when making polite requests
- Correct: Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen, wo die Toilette ist? (modal first, then pronoun)
Quick reference: useful phrases with translations
- Könnten Sie mir helfen? — Could you help me?
- Würden Sie das bitte unterschreiben? — Would you please sign this?
- Möchten Sie etwas trinken? — Would you like something to drink?
- Ich möchte gern bestellen. — I would like to order.
- Wir könnten das morgen besprechen. — We could discuss that tomorrow.
- Das sollte reichen. — That should be enough.
- Es könnte schwierig werden. — It could get difficult.
- Ich würde sagen, wir fangen jetzt an. — I would say we start now.
- Hättest du einen Moment Zeit? — Would you have a moment?
- Sollten Sie Fragen haben, kontaktieren Sie mich bitte. — Should you have any questions, please contact me.
Glossary (short)</b]
- Konjunktiv II: The German subjunctive II. Used for hypotheticals, polite requests, and softened statements.
- Periphrastic: A multi-word construction (here: würde + infinitive) used instead of a single-word form.
- Synthetic form: A single-word Konjunktiv II that comes from the verb stem (e.g., hätte, wäre, ginge).
- Modal verbs (Modalverben): Verbs like können, sollen, müssen, dürfen, mögen; often used in Konjunktiv II for requests/possibility.
- Double infinitive: In perfect conditionals with modals you often use hätte + double infinitive (e.g., Ich hätte das tun können).
- Präteritum: Simple past tense; sometimes identical to Konjunktiv II for regular verbs, which is why würde + infinitive is helpful.
Summary: When to use würde, könnte, sollte
- würde + infinitive: a safe, common way to form the conditional for most verbs (I would ...).
- könnte: Konjunktiv II of können — expresses ability/possibility and is used for polite requests or hypothetical ability (I could ... / Could you ...?).
- sollte: Konjunktiv II of sollen — expresses advice or mild obligation (You should ... / Should you ...?).
Use modal KII forms (könnte, sollte, möchte) for natural, idiomatic requests and suggestions. Use würde + infinitive whenever the one-word Konjunktiv II is awkward or identical to the past tense. Practice noticing which form sounds more polite or softer in context — that will help you choose quickly.
