Compound pronouns (jakikolwiek, gdziekolwiek) 6 use and inflection

What are these "-kolwiek" compounds?
They are indefinite compounds built from question words (kto, co, jaki, gdzie, kiedy, ile, which) plus the suffix [-kolwiek]. They mean roughly "any / whoever / whatever / wherever / whenever" and express a free choice or an indefinite reference: "any at all," "whichever," or "ever." Examples: ktokolwiek (whoever / anyone), cokolwiek (anything / whatever), jakikolwiek (any kind of / whichever), gdziekolwiek (wherever).

When do I use them?

To express "any... at all" or "whichever" in general or conditional contexts: "If anyone calls...," "In case of any problem..."
- Je5Bli ktokolwiek zadzwoni, powiedz mu. (If anyone calls, tell them.)

To emphasize lack of restriction: "any kind of" (jakikolwiek) or "anywhere/whenever" (gdziekolwiek, kiedykolwiek).
- W razie jakiegokolwiek problemu, zadzwo44. (In case of any problem, call.)

In subordinate clauses (especially conditional, concessive or relative clauses): "Wherever you go...," "Whatever you do...," "Whoever did it..."
- Gdziekolwiek pójdziesz, znajdziesz pomoc. (Wherever you go, you'll find help.)
How do I form them?
Basic rule: attach -kolwiek to an interrogative base. Then, if the base itself is an inflecting word (like jaki, kto, który), the compound normally takes the case form of that base and then + [-kolwiek]. For adverbial bases (like gdzie, kiedy) the result is an adverb and does not inflect.

Examples of formation:

jaki (what/which) -> jakikolwiek (adjective/pronoun modifying a noun):

 • nominative stem jaki + [-kolwiek] -> jakikolwiek

 • genitive stem jakiego + [-kolwiek] -> jakiegokolwiek

kto (who) -> ktokolwiek (anyone/whoever):

 • nominative ktokolwiek, genitive kogokolwiek, dative komukolwiek, instrumental/locative kimkolwiek

gdzie (where) -> gdziekolwiek (wherever) — adverb, no case inflection

co (what/thing) -> cokolwiek (anything/whatever) — usually functions as an object or in subordinate clauses

How do they inflect? (case changes) 6 clear examples
The compounds that start from an inflecting base (like jaki or kto) change their form according to case. Below are natural example sentences that show common case forms. Each Polish example is followed by an English translation.

B. "ktokolwiek" and other personal pronouns 6 case forms
Take the case form of kto (kto, kogo, komu, kim) and add [-kolwiek]. These forms are used like pronouns; they replace a person.

Nominative: ktokolwiek

 • Ktokolwiek to zrobi42, musi si19 przyzna07.

(Whoever did it must confess.)

Genitive / Accusative: kogokolwiek

 • Je5Bli spotkasz kogokolwiek na ulicy, powiedz mu.

(If you meet anyone on the street, tell him.)

Dative: komukolwiek

 • Czy mo7Cesz przekaza07 to komukolwiek?

(Can you pass this to anyone?)

Instrumental / Locative (forms from "kim"): kimkolwiek

 • Z kimkolwiek porozmawiasz, b05d7C uprzejmy.

(Whomever you talk to, be polite.)

 • O kimkolwiek mF3wi42e5B, nie wspominaj tego.

(About whoever you were talking, don't mention it.)

C. Adverbial compounds (they do NOT inflect): gdziekolwiek, kiedykolwiek, cokolwiek
These are adverbs or pronominal adverbs and stay the same in every case.

Gdziekolwiek pF3jdziesz, znajdziesz pomoc.
(Wherever you go, you'll find help.)

Mo7Cesz usi055B07 gdziekolwiek.
(You can sit anywhere.)

Cokolwiek powiesz, nie uwierzy19.
(Whatever you say, I won't believe it.)

Kiedykolwiek potrzebujesz pomocy, dzwo44.
(Whenever you need help, call.)

How to choose between cokolwiek / jakikolwiek / którykolwiek

cokolwiek = "anything / whatever" (pronoun): used when you mean "any thing at all" or in subordinate clauses.

 • Powiedz mi cokolwiek. (Tell me anything.)

jakikolwiek = "any kind of / any (adjective)" (used before a noun; inflects):

 • Przynie5B jak05kolwiek rzecz. (Bring any object.)

którykolwiek = "whichever (one)" (choice among a known set; inflects like który):

 • Wybierz któr05kolwiek z nich. (Choose whichever of them.)

Common mistakes and tips

DonB7t overuse [-kolwiek] in simple affirmative statements. Native speakers often prefer jaki5B / co5B / kto5B in neutral affirmative sentences:

 • Natural: Mam jaki5B pomys42. (I have some idea.)

 • Less natural: Mam jakikolwiek pomys42. (This sounds odd in affirmative.)

For negative sentences, prefer negative pronouns (nikt, nic) instead of using [-kolwiek] with a negative verb:

 • Natural: Nie widzia43em nikogo. (I didn't see anyone.)

 • Awkward: Nie widzia43em kogokolwiek. (Avoid.)

Remember that adverbial compounds like gdziekolwiek do not take case endings. If you need to modify a noun with "in whatever " use a declinable form of który:

 • Gdziekolwiek pF3jdziesz... (adverb)

 • W którymkolwiek mie5Bcie (in whichever city) (adjective-like, declines)

Spelling: write the compound as one word (no space): jakikolwiek, kogokolwiek, gdziekolwiek.

Quick reference: common -kolwiek compounds

ktokolwiek 5 whoever/anyone (declines: kogokolwiek, komukolwiek, kimkolwiek)

kto5B 5 someone (contrast)

cokolwiek 5 anything/whatever (invariable)

jakikolwiek 5 any kind of (declines like jaki)

którykolwiek 5 whichever (declines like który)

gdziekolwiek, kiedykolwiek 5 wherever, whenever (adverbial, invariable)

ilekolwiek 5 however many / however much (invariable)

Glossary (simple definitions)

Indefinite pronoun: a word that refers to non-specific persons or things (anyone, anything).

Adverbial: a word that modifies verbs (wherever, whenever).

Case (Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Instrumental, Locative): grammatical form that shows a nounB7s role in the sentence; pronouns/adjectives must agree.

Inflect: to change form for case, number, or gender (as in jakikolwiek -> jakiegokolwiek).

Agreement: adjective/pronoun must match the noun in gender, number and case.

Final tip
When you meet a -kolwiek word, ask two questions:
1) Is the base word an adjective/pronoun that normally inflects? If yes, expect case forms (e.g. jakiegokolwiek, kogokolwiek).
2) Is the base word an adverb? If yes, the compound is invariable (e.g. gdziekolwiek, kiedykolwiek).

This pattern will help you recognise and form the correct case forms in real sentences. Good luck practicing!
