Conditional mood — personal and impersonal forms
B2Conditional mood — personal and impersonal forms (Polish)
What is the conditional mood?
The conditional mood (Polish: tryb przypuszczający) expresses hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, softening of statements, or consequences that depend on some condition. In English it usually corresponds to "would / could / should".
When do I use the conditional?

Hypotheses about the present or future: "If X were true, Y would happen." (Gdyby miał czas, przyszedłby.)

Counterfactuals about the past: "If X had happened, Y would have happened." (Gdybym wtedy wiedział, nie zrobiłbym tego.)

Polite requests or offers: "I would like... / Could you...?" (Chciałbym bilet. / Czy mógłbyś mi pomóc?)

General suggestions, soft recommendations or impersonal possibilities: (Byłoby dobrze, gdyby...) or (Można by to zrobić.)

Speculation / tentative statements: (On powiedział, że przyjedzie — On powiedział, że przyjechałby.)
How do I form the personal conditional?
The personal conditional is built from two pieces:

the past-tense form (the past participle/past tense stem) of the verb, which shows gender and number as in the past tense; and

the particle "by" carrying personal endings: bym, byś, by, byśmy, byście, by.
Put together, many forms are written as one word (a clitic attaches to the verb or to the first element of the clause). Typical examples: "zrobiłbym", "gdybym", "mogłabyś".
Quick rule: past form + bym/byś/by/byśmy/byście/by.

Notes about these tables

The form of the past tense (robił / robiła / robili / robiły) carries gender and number. Add the particle-forms (bym, byś, by, byśmy, byście, by) to create the conditional.

For 1st and 2nd person singular the speaker’s gender matters: a woman says "robiłabym", a man "robiłbym".

For 1st and 2nd person plural and 3rd plural there are masculine (used for mixed or all-male groups) and feminine (all-female) variants.

Many verbs follow the same pattern; irregular verbs (e.g. móc → mógłbym/mogłabym) use their irregular past stems but the particle is the same.

How do I form the impersonal conditional (bezosobowe)?
There are several impersonal patterns. They do not refer to a specific subject (no clear "I/you/he"); they are used for general possibilities, suggestions, or to say something "could / would be done".
1) Neuter conditional of verbs or "byłoby"-type phrases
- Use a neuter singular conditional to make a general statement about a situation: "Byłoby miło, gdybyśmy się spotkali." (It would be nice if we met.)
- Example: "Byłoby lepiej, gdybyś odpoczął." (It would be better if you rested.)
2) Impersonal modal constructions with infinitive
- mo7cna (possible): "Można by to zrobić." (One could do it / It could be done.)
- dać się: "Dałoby się to naprawić." (It could be fixed / It would be possible to fix it.)
- trzeba: "Trzeba by było zadzwonić." (It would be necessary to call.)
- należałoby: a single-word impersonal conditional: "Należałoby to sprawdzić." (One should check that.)
These impersonal forms often translate as English "it would be..., one could..., it would be possible to..."
Examples contrasting personal vs impersonal

Personal (specific subject): "Moglibyśmy pójść do kina." — "We could go to the cinema." (subject = we)

Impersonal (general suggestion): "Można by pójść do kina." — "One could go to the cinema / It would be possible to go to the cinema." (no specific subject)

Personal polite request: "Czy mógłbyś mi pomóc?" — "Could you help me?" (addressing you directly)

Impersonal permission: "Można by to zrobić." — "It could be done / One could do that." (possibility)
Politeness and fixed expressions
The conditional is often used for polite speech:

Chciałbym kawę. (I would like a coffee.)

Czy mógłby Pan podać sól? (Could you (formal) pass the salt?)

Prosiłbym o menu. (I would like the menu — polite.)
Aspect (perfective vs imperfective) matters
Aspect in Polish (perfective vs imperfective) determines the nuance of the conditional:

Perfective (one completed action): "Zrobiłbym to" — I'd do it (one-time/completed action).

Imperfective (habitual / ongoing): "Robiłbym to" — I would do it repeatedly or I'd be doing it.
Choose the aspect the same way you choose it in other Polish tenses.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Double "by": wrong — "gdybym by miał". Correct — "gdybym miał" or "gdyby miał".

Wrong use of impersonal with a clear subject: Don't say "Można byśmy poszli" — use the personal form: "Moglibyśmy pójść."

Mixing future tense in an "if" clause: In Polish, a present/future hypothetical uses the past form with "gdyby": "Gdybym miał czas, przyszedłbym." Not: "Gdybym będę miał czas..."

Forgetting gender agreement: A woman should use feminine conditional: "Chciałabym" (not "Chciałbym").

Placement/orthography of "by": Standard written Polish joins the particle to the preceding word (e.g. "zrobiłbym", "gdybym"). Avoid splitting as a general rule.
Where does the particle "by" go?
"By" is a clitic particle with personal forms (bym/byś/by...). It usually attaches to the verb or the first word of the clause:

Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym. (not: *gdy bym miał)

Zrobiłbym to. (the particle is attached to the verb: zrobił + bym)

"On by to zrobił" is possible in spoken style — but typical written style attaches the particle to the verb: "On zrobiłby to".
Short usage checklist

If you refer to a specific subject: use a personal conditional (past form + bym/byś/..., agree for gender/number).

If you make a general suggestion or say "it would be possible", consider an impersonal structure: "można by", "dałoby się", "należałoby" or "byłoby...".

Choose perfective for single/completed hypothetical actions, imperfective for repeated/ongoing ones.

Use "gdyby + past" in the if-clause and conditional in the main clause for hypothetical conditions: "Gdyby... , (subject) ...by...".
Glossary (brief)

tryb przypuszczający — conditional mood.

particle "by" — a clitic used to form the conditional; its personal forms are bym/byś/by/byśmy/byście/by.

personal form (forma osobowa) — conditional forms that agree with a specific subject (I/you/he/...).

impersonal form (forma bezosobowa) — constructions without a specific subject (można by..., dałoby się..., należałoby...).

aspect — perfective vs imperfective; it affects whether the conditional describes one completed action or habitual/ongoing actions.

protasis / apodosis — terms for the "if" clause (protasis) and the result clause (apodosis); in Polish, protasis uses "gdyby + past".
