Constructions with infinitives and participles: "zacząć", "skończyć", "próbować" + verb

This guide explains how to use Polish verbs zacząć (to start), skończyć (to finish), and próbować (to try) with infinitives and with participles (imiesłowy). You will learn what these combinations mean, how aspect (perfective vs. imperfective) affects the meaning, how to form common participles, useful alternatives, and frequent learner mistakes. Examples are in Polish with English translations.

What does this pattern express?

  • zacząć + infinitive — begin doing something (enter a process or start an action).

  • skończyć + infinitive — finish doing something (bring an activity to its end).

  • próbować/spróbować + infinitive — try to do something (attempt). Próbować = imperfective (ongoing/repeated attempts), spróbować = perfective (one attempt / try it once).

  • Participles (imiesłowy) — adverbial participles express "while doing" (-ąc) or "having done" (-wszy/-łszy); they can replace subordinate clauses in many contexts.

How do you form the basic pattern?
The basic structure is: conjugated verb (zacząć/skończyć/próbować) + infinitive (bezokolicznik).

  • Zacząłem czytać. — I started reading. (zacząć + czytać)

  • Skończyła pisać list. — She finished writing the letter. (skończyć + pisać)

  • Próbowałem zadzwonić. — I tried to call. (próbować + perfective infinitive)

zacząć (to start) — when and how

  • Use zacząć + infinitive to say someone begins an action.

  • Zacząłem czytać książkę. — I started reading a book. (imperfective infinitive: focus on the process; I may still be reading)

  • Zaczęła się uczyć niemieckiego. — She started learning German. (note: "uczyć się" = to learn; without "się" "uczyć" = to teach)

- Aspect nuance (imperfective vs perfective infinitive after zacząć):
- zacząć + imperfective infinitive (common): enter a process — Zacząłem biegać. — I started running.
- zacząć + perfective infinitive (less common, more specific): begin an action seen as a whole or to emphasize the start of a single completed action — Zacząłem przeczytać książkę. — I began (to) read the book (with the idea of completing it). This perfective form is possible but often sounds more marked than the imperfective.

- Participle variants:
- Zaczynając kurs, warto przeczytać opis. — When starting the course, it's worth reading the description. (zaczynając = while starting)
- Zacząwszy od poniedziałku, wprowadzono nowe zasady. — Starting from Monday, new rules were introduced. (formal/literary)

skończyć (to finish) — when and how

  • Use skończyć + infinitive to say someone finished doing something.

  • Skończyłem pisać list. — I finished writing the letter.

  • Skończyła studia w zeszłym roku. — She finished university last year.

- Aspect nuance:
- skończyć + imperfective infinitive is the standard and natural option because skończyć already marks completion: Skończyłem czytać. — I finished reading.
- skończyć + perfective infinitive is possible but often unnecessary or slightly redundant: Skończyłem napisać list. — I finished having written the letter. Both Skończyłem pisać list and Skończyłem napisać list are heard; the first is more neutral.

- Participle / alternatives:
- Skończywszy obiad, wyszliśmy na spacer. — Having finished dinner, we went for a walk. (formal)
- Po skończeniu obiadów poszliśmy na spacer. — After finishing dinner, we went for a walk. (common spoken/written alternative)

próbować (to try) and spróbować — when and how

  • Próbować + infinitive (imperfective) suggests repeated or ongoing attempts or describing the activity of trying.

  • Próbowałem naprawić samochód przez cały dzień, ale mi się nie udało. — I tried to fix the car all day, but I couldn't.

- Spróbować + infinitive (perfective) usually means to try once or to make a single attempt, or to taste/try something (food, experience).
- Spróbowałem zadzwonić do niej, ale numer był zajęty. — I tried to call her (one attempt), but the line was busy.
- Spróbuj tego ciasta. — Try this cake. (taste it)

- Choosing aspect after próbować:
- próbować + perfective infinitive — attempt to bring about a completed result: Próbowałem naprawić komputer. (I attempted to repair it — focused on the result)
- próbować + imperfective infinitive — attempt viewed as process or repeated tries: Próbowałem naprawiać komputer przez kilka dni. — I was trying/fiddling with fixing the computer over several days.

- Adverbial participle with próbować:
- Próbując otworzyć drzwi, zgubiłem klucz. — While trying to open the door, I lost the key. (próbując = while trying)

Participles (imiesłowy): formation and use
Polish has several participle (imiesłów) forms useful with these verbs. The two most relevant adverbial participles are:
1) Present adverbial participle (-ąc) (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) — formed from the imperfective infinitive; it expresses simultaneous action ("while ...").

  • robić → robiąc: Czytając gazetę, wypiłem kawę. — While reading the newspaper, I drank coffee.

  • Important rule: the subject of the participle must be the same as the subject of the main clause. Wrong: "Czytając książkę, telefon zadzwonił." → Correct: "Gdy czytałem książkę, telefon zadzwonił." ("While I was reading the book, the phone rang.")

2) Perfective (anterior) adverbial participle (-wszy / -łszy) (imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni) — expresses an action finished before the main clause; often formal/literary.
- zrobić → zrobiwszy: Zrobiwszy zadanie, poszedł do parku. — Having done the task, he went to the park.
- przeczytać → przeczytawszy: Przeczytawszy list, od razu odpisałem. — Having read the letter, I replied immediately.
- These forms are common in written or formal register; in speech people prefer: "Po przeczytaniu listu, ..." or "Po tym, jak przeczytałem list, ...".

Other participles you will meet (briefly):
- Present adjectival participle (-ący): czytający (the reading man).
- Passive past participle (-ny / -ty / -ony): przeczytany, zrobiony (read, done) — used as adjectives or in passive constructions.

How aspect (perfective vs imperfective) changes meaning — clear pairs

  • czynać / zacząć pair: zaczynać (impf.) vs zacząć (pf.)

  • Zaczynałem oglądać film. — I was starting to watch the film. (impf.)

  • Zacząłem oglądać film. — I began watching the film. (pf. form of "to start")

- Examples comparing complements:
- Zacząłem czytać książkę. (impf. complement) — I started reading (entered the process).
- Zacząłem przeczytać książkę. (pf. complement) — I began to read the book (treated as one whole action; more marked).

- Skończyłem pisać list. — I finished writing the letter. (natural: skończyć expresses completion)
- Skończyłem napisać list. — Slightly more emphatic about the result (you may hear both).

- Próbowałem naprawić komputer. (pf. complement) — I attempted to repair the computer (aim = repair it).
- Próbowałem naprawiać komputer. (impf. complement) — I tried fixing the computer repeatedly / experimented with fixing it.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
1. Dangling participles (mismatched subject):

  • Wrong: "Czytając książkę, telefon zadzwonił." (Implies the phone read.)

  • Correct: "Gdy czytałem książkę, zadzwonił telefon." or "Czytając książkę, zasnąłem." (subject must match)

2. Confusing "uczyć" vs "uczyć się":
- "Zaczął uczyć angielskiego." — He began to teach English.
- "Zaczął się uczyć angielskiego." or "Zaczął uczyć się angielskiego." — He began learning English.
(Remember: "uczyć się" = learn; "uczyć" = teach.)

3. Wrong choice of aspect after próbować / spróbować:
- Wrong: using spróbować when you mean repeated attempts. Use próbować for ongoing/repeated tries and spróbować for a single attempt.
- Correct: "Próbowałem naprawić komputer przez kilka dni." vs "Spróbowałem zadzwonić raz, ale nie udało się."

4. Overusing formal perfective participles in speech:
- "Przeczytawszy list,..." is grammatical but formal. Prefer: "Po przeczytaniu listu,..." or "Po tym, jak przeczytałem list,..." in spoken Polish.

5. Using skończyć with reflexive wrongly:
- "Skończyłem się uczyć" is not used to mean "I finished learning." Use "Skończyłem naukę" or "Skończyłem się uczyć" is awkward; correct: "Skończyłem się uczyć" is rarely used — instead: "Skończyłem się uczyć" → better: "Skończyłem się uczyć" is unnatural. (Safer: "Skończyłem się uczyć" avoid; say "Skończyłem naukę" or "Skończyłem uczyć się" — but note this area can be tricky because word order and reflexive pronoun position can vary; prefer simpler expressions: "Skończyłem naukę" or "Skończyłem uczenie się" [rare].)

Style and natural alternatives

  • Po + verbal noun (common in speech/writing): "Po przeczytaniu/Po skończeniu" is a natural alternative to perfective participles.

  • Po przeczytaniu instrukcji, zacząłem składać meble. — After reading the instructions, I started assembling the furniture.

- Po tym jak / Gdy / Kiedy + clause is very natural and unambiguous:
- Po tym, jak przeczytałem list, zadzwoniłem do niej. — After I read the letter, I called her.
- Kiedy zaczęliśmy pracować, było już późno. — When we started working, it was already late.

Quick reference — short example pairs

  • Zacząłem czytać. — I started reading. (start a process)

  • Zacząłem przeczytać. — I began to read (with the whole action in view).

- Skończyłem czytać. — I finished reading.
- Po przeczytaniu książki, poszedłem spać. — After reading the book, I went to sleep.

- Próbowałem naprawić samochód. — I tried to fix the car. (attempt to achieve the repair)
- Próbowałem naprawiać samochód przez cały dzień. — I was trying/fiddling with fixing the car all day.
- Spróbuj tego! — Try this (once / taste it).

Glossary (short)

  • Bezokolicznik = infinitive (czytać, napisać, zrobić).

  • Imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny = present adverbial participle (-ąc) = "while doing".

  • Imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni = perfective (anterior) adverbial participle (-wszy / -łszy) = "having done" (formal).

  • Perfective (dok. / pf.) = verb aspect that presents the action as complete/whole (przeczytać, napisać).

  • Imperfective (niedok. / impf.) = verb aspect that presents the action as ongoing, habitual, or repeated (czytać, pisać).

Final tips

  • With zacząć and skończyć you will usually use the infinitive; choose imperfective or perfective according to whether you want to show the action as a process (imperfective) or as a whole/completed event (perfective).

  • Use próbować for ongoing or repeated attempts; use spróbować for a single attempt or when you mean "to taste/try (once)."

  • When you want spoken, natural phrasing for "after doing X," prefer "po + noun" (Po przeczytaniu...) or "po tym, jak..." over the formal perfective participle in everyday speech.
