- Directa: 'Where is the station?' (¿Dónde está la estación?)
- Indirecta y cortés: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'

- Para preguntas con palabra interrogativa (who, what, where, when, why, how, which):
Introductor + palabra interrogativa + sujeto + verbo + resto.

Fórmula: [Introductor] + [wh-word] + [subject] + [verb] ...

- Para preguntas de sí/no: usamos 'if' o 'whether' en lugar del wh-word:
Introductor + if/whether + sujeto + verbo + resto.

Fórmula: [Introductor] + [if/whether] + [subject] + [verb] ...

Ejemplos (palabras interrogativas)

- Directa: 'Where is the restroom?'
Indirecta: 'Could you tell me where the restroom is?' (¿Podría decirme dónde está el baño?)

- Directa: 'What time does the meeting start?'
Indirecta: 'Do you know what time the meeting starts?' (¿Sabe a qué hora empieza la reunión?)

- Directa: 'How can I get to the airport?'
Indirecta: 'Would you mind telling me how I can get to the airport?'

Ejemplos (sí/no con if/whether)

- Directa: 'Is the Wi‑Fi free?'
Indirecta: 'Do you know if the Wi‑Fi is free?' (¿Sabe si el Wi‑Fi es gratis?)

- Directa: 'Will the package arrive today?'
Indirecta: 'Could you tell me whether the package will arrive today?' (¿Podría decirme si el paquete llegará hoy?)

- Nota: 'whether' suele ser más formal que 'if' y se usa antes de un infinitivo: 'I don't know whether to accept the job.'

- 'Could you tell me…'
Ej.: 'Could you tell me where the nearest pharmacy is?'

- 'Can you tell me…' (menos formal que 'could')
Ej.: 'Can you tell me what time the shop opens?'

- 'Do you know…'
Ej.: 'Do you know when the next train leaves?' (¿Sabe cuándo sale el próximo tren?)

- 'Would you mind telling me…' (+ -ing)
Ej.: 'Would you mind telling me the price?' (¿Le importaría decirme el precio?)

- 'I was wondering if/whether…' (muy cortés, informal/formal según contexto)
Ej.: 'I was wondering if you could help me with this form.'

- 'I wonder if…' (menos formal que 'I was wondering')
Ej.: 'I wonder if you have any openings.' (Me pregunto si tienen vacantes.)

- 'Do you happen to know…' (suaviza y expresa incertidumbre)
Ej.: 'Do you happen to know where the post office is?'

- 'Would you be able to tell me…' (muy formal y educado)
Ej.: 'Would you be able to tell me the procedure for refunds?' (¿Podría decirme el procedimiento para devoluciones?)

- 'May I ask…' (para pedir permiso antes de preguntar)
Ej.: 'May I ask where you learned English?' (¿Puedo preguntar dónde aprendió inglés?)

- 'Would you mind if I asked…'
Ej.: 'Would you mind if I asked your opinion?'

Ejemplos incorrectos / correctos

- Incorrecto: 'Could you tell me where is the station?'
Correcto: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'

- Incorrecto: 'May I ask where do you live?'
Correcto: 'May I ask where you live?'

Explicación rápida: en la pregunta directa 'Where is the station?' el auxiliar (is) va antes del sujeto (the station). En la indirecta la cláusula es como una afirmación: 'the station is'.

Cuando la palabra interrogativa es el sujeto (por ejemplo, 'Who called?'), la forma indirecta coincide con la directa en orden: 'Do you know who called?' (No hay auxiliar que mover.)

Tiempos verbales y reported speech (cambio de tiempo / backshift)

- En cláusulas indirectas corteses (p. ej. 'Could you tell me where he lives?') normalmente mantienes el tiempo que refleja la situación actual.

Ejemplos

- Petición/pregunta cortés ahora: 'Could you tell me what time it is?' (¿Podría decirme qué hora es?) — se usa presente.

- Reported speech: Directa: 'Where are you going?' → Reportada: 'He asked me where I was going.' (Él me preguntó a dónde iba.) — aquí 'are' pasa a 'was' porque el verbo de reporte está en pasado.

- Directa: 'Do you like coffee?' → Reportada: 'She asked if I liked coffee.'

- Si la oración completa es una pregunta (empieza con 'Could you...', 'Do you know...', 'Would you mind...'), entonces termina con signo de interrogación: 'Could you tell me where the bus stop is?'
I wonder where the bus stop is.'

Ejemplos

- 'Do you know when the museum opens?' → termina con '?'
- 'I wonder when the museum opens.' → termina con '.'

Grados de cortesía: ¿qué frase elegir?

De más formal/cortés a menos:

- Muy formal/educado: 'I would be grateful if you could tell me...', 'I would appreciate it if you could...'
Ej.: 'I would be grateful if you could tell me the status of my application.'

- Muy cortés: 'Would you mind telling me...', 'I was wondering if you could...'
Ej.: 'I was wondering if you could send the document.' (Me preguntaba si podría enviar el documento.)

- Cortés/neutral: 'Could you tell me...', 'Would you be able to tell me...'
Ej.: 'Could you tell me where the conference is held?' (¿Podría decirme dónde se celebra la conferencia?)

- Informal/educado: 'Can you tell me...', 'Do you know...'
Ej.: 'Can you tell me how to get to the station?' (¿Puedes decirme cómo llegar a la estación?)

- Directo: preguntas sin suavizar ('Where is the station?') — mejor con amigos o situaciones informales.

Errores comunes y cómo corregirlos

1. Inversión dentro de la cláusula indirecta

- Incorrecto: 'Could you tell me where is the bank?'
Correcto: 'Could you tell me where the bank is?'

2. Uso incorrecto de if/whether y el orden del verbo

- Incorrecto: 'Do you know if will the train arrive on time?'
Correcto: 'Do you know if the train will arrive on time?'

3. Forma de 'would you mind' + infinitivo equivocado

- Incorrecto: 'Would you mind to tell me your name?'
Correcto: 'Would you mind telling me your name?'
Explicación: después de 'would you mind' se usa gerundio (-ing), no infinitivo.

4. 'Would you mind if I asked' — tiempo en la cláusula condicional

- Incorrecto: 'Would you mind if I ask you a question?'
Correcto: 'Would you mind if I asked you a question?'
Explicación: tras 'Would you mind if...' se usa normalmente el pasado simple para expresar cortesía.

5. Uso de 'whether' antes de infinitivo

- Incorrecto: 'I don't know if to accept the job.'
Correcto: 'I don't know whether to accept the job.'

Frases útiles listas para usar

- 'Could you tell me... ?' — 'Could you tell me how to get to the station?'
- 'Do you know... ?' — 'Do you know when the shop opens?'
- 'Would you mind telling me... ?' — 'Would you mind telling me the time?'
- 'I was wondering if/whether... ' — 'I was wondering if you could help me with my luggage.'
- 'Do you happen to know... ?' — 'Do you happen to know where the taxi stand is?'
- 'May I ask... ?' — 'May I ask your full name?'
- 'I would appreciate it if you could... ' — 'I would appreciate it if you could send the invoice.'

Consejos prácticos para sonar natural y cortés

- Elige la fórmula según el contexto: en correos formales usa 'I would appreciate...' o 'I would be grateful...'. En conversación diaria 'Could you...' o 'Do you know...' suelen ser suficientes.
- Acompaña la pregunta con un 'please' o 'excuse me' si la situación lo requiere: 'Excuse me, could you tell me where the museum is, please?'

Glosario

- Wh-word: Palabra interrogativa en inglés (who, what, where, when, why, how, which).

- Wh-question: 'Could you tell me + where/what/when/why/how + subject + verb... ?'
Ej.: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'

- Yes/no: 'Do you know + if/whether + subject + verb... ?'
Ej.: 'Do you know if the Wi‑Fi is free?'

- Suavizar aún más: 'I was wondering if/whether you could...' / 'Would you mind telling me...' / 'Do you happen to know...'
