Directo (quoted):
- She said, "I live in London."
Reported (indirect):
- She said (that) she lived in London.
- Present simple → Past simple
- "I like coffee." → He said (that) he liked coffee.
- (Directo) "I like coffee." (Reported) He said (that) he liked coffee. / Traducción: "Me gusta el café." → "Dijo que le gustaba el café."
- Present continuous → Past continuous
- "I'm studying English." → He said he was studying English. ("Estoy estudiando inglés." → "Dijo que estaba estudiando inglés.")
- Present perfect → Past perfect
- "I have finished my homework." → She said she had finished her homework. ("He terminado mi tarea." → "Dijo que había terminado su tarea.")
- Past simple → Past perfect
- "I saw her yesterday." → He said he had seen her the day before.
- Past continuous → Past perfect continuous
- "They were playing all afternoon." → He said they had been playing all afternoon.
- Will → would
- "I'll call you tomorrow." → She said she would call me the next day. (mañana → the next day)
- Can → could
- "I can help you." → He said he could help me.
- May → might
- "I may arrive late." → She said she might arrive late.
- Must → had to (habitual)
- "I must leave now." → He said he had to leave then.
- Should, would, could, might (cuando ya están en pasado/condicional) suelen permanecer igual
- "You should see a doctor." → She said I should see a doctor.
Excepciones y matices
- Si el verbo introductorio está en presente (says), normalmente no retroceden los tiempos: She says, "I live in Madrid." → She says she lives in Madrid.
- Verdades generales o hechos científicos a menudo no cambian de tiempo: He said, "Water boils at 100°C." → He said water boils at 100°C.
- "I" → he / she / they (según el hablante original)
- "you" → I / he / she / they (según quién informe)
- "my" → his / her / their
Ejemplo:
- Directo: John to Mary: "You are late." (John dice a Mary: "Estás tarde.")
- Reportado por Mary: John told me I was late. (Mary: Juan me dijo que yo llegaba tarde.)
Expresiones de tiempo y lugar (cambios habituales)
- now → then
- today → that day
- yesterday → the day before / the previous day
- tomorrow → the next day / the following day
- here → there
- this → that
- last week → the week before / the previous week
- ago → before
Ejemplo:
- Directo: "I will see you tomorrow," she said. → Reportado: She said she would see me the next day.
- Directo: "I'm working here now," he said. → Reportado: He said he was working there then.
Estructura básica
- Reporting verb + (that) + sujeto + verbo (sin inversión)
- He said (that) + she + had gone.
- "That" es opcional en muchos casos: She said (that) she was tired.
Ejemplos variados
1) Present simple → past simple:
- Directo: "I like pizza," Tom said.
- Reportado: Tom said (that) he liked pizza.
- Traducción: Tom dijo: "Me gusta la pizza." → Tom dijo que le gustaba la pizza.
2) Present perfect:
- Directo: "I have seen that movie," Anna said.
- Reportado: Anna said she had seen that movie.
- Traducción: "He visto esa película." → "Dijo que la había visto."
3) Future (will):
- Directo: "We will win," they said.
- Reportado: They said they would win.
- Traducción: "Ganaremos." → "Dijeron que ganarían."
4) Modal (can):
- Directo: "I can finish it today," he said.
- Reportado: He said he could finish it that day.
Say vs. tell vs. ask
- say: no necesita objeto necesariamente. She said (that) she was tired. / She said to me that she was tired.
- tell: necesita un objeto: He told me (that) he was tired. (no: He told that ...)
- ask: se usa para preguntas o peticiones: He asked if I could help him.
Yes/No questions
- Estructura: reporting verb (asked, wondered) + if / whether + sujeto + verbo (sin inversión)
- Directo: "Are you coming?" she asked.
- Reportado: She asked if I was coming.
- Traducción: Ella preguntó: "¿Vienes?" → Ella preguntó si yo venía.
- Ejemplos:
- Directo: "Did you finish the work?" → Reportado: He asked if I had finished the work.
- Directo: "Will they arrive on time?" → Reportado: She asked whether they would arrive on time.
Nota sobre if / whether
- both are possible for yes/no questions. "Whether" es más formal y se usa a menudo antes de "or" o en escritura formal: He asked whether to stay or to go.
Wh-questions (what, where, when, why, how, who, which, etc.)
- Estructura: reporting verb + wh-word + sujeto + verbo (sin inversión)
- Directo: "Where do you live?" → Reportado: He asked where I lived.
- Directo: "What did she say?" → Reportado: He asked what she had said.
- Ejemplos:
- Directo: "When will the meeting start?" → Reportado: She asked when the meeting would start.
- Directo: "Who broke the window?" → Reportado: He asked who had broken the window.
- Evitar la inversión en la oración reportada: incorrecto → She asked where did I go? Correcto → She asked where I had gone.
- Para preguntas de sujeto (Who broke it?), la estructura reportada mantiene el orden sujeto-verbo: He asked who had broken it.
- Directo: "Close the window!" → Reportado: She told me to close the window. (Ella me dijo que cerrara la ventana.)
- Directo: "Please help me." → Reportado: He asked me to help him. (Él me pidió que le ayudara.)
- Negativo: "Don't be late!" → He told us not to be late.
- Incorrecto: He said, "I live in Madrid." → He said he lives in Madrid.
- Correcto: He said he lived in Madrid.
- Incorrecto: She asked, "Where are you going?" → She asked where are you going.
- Correcto: She asked where I was going.
3) Usar "tell" sin objeto.
- Incorrecto: He told to come.
- Correcto: He told me to come. / He told him to come.
4) No cambiar expresiones de tiempo/lugar.
- Incorrecto: "I will see you tomorrow," → He said he would see me tomorrow.
- Correcto: He said he would see me the next day.
4) Cambia las expresiones de tiempo y lugar (now → then; today → that day; etc.).
