It is essential that he attend")

It is essential that he attend")

- Necesidad o obligación (it is essential/necessary/vital that...)
- Recomendación o sugerencia (recommend/suggest/request/advise that...)
- Demanda o insistencia (demand/insist/order that...)
- Urgencia o importancia (it is urgent/important/imperative that...)
- Deseos o situaciones contrarias a la realidad (wish, if + were)

Ejemplos (con traducción):
- It is essential that he attend the meeting.
- The doctor recommended that she take the medicine.
- The union demanded that the company reopen negotiations.
- I insist that you be on time. — Insisto en que estés a tiempo.
- I wish I were taller.

- El verbo "to be" toma la forma "be" (no "is/are").

Estructura típica: [impersonal/verb/noun] + that + [sujeto] + [verbo en forma base]

Ejemplos:
- It is important that she attend. — Es importante que ella asista.
- They requested that John be present. — Solicitaron que John estuviera presente.
- The school requires that every student submit their form.

- La forma negativa se construye colocando "not" antes del verbo en su forma base: "that he not be".
- En inglés británico formal es frecuente usar "that he should not be" en lugar del subjuntivo puro.

Ejemplos:
- It is crucial that he not be late. — Es crucial que él no llegue tarde.
- The judge ordered that the prisoner not be released.

Ejemplos comparativos:
- (US) It is essential that he attend the meeting.
- (UK) It is essential that he should attend the meeting.

Infinitivo con "for + pronombre + to" (otra opción):
It is essential for him to attend." Esta forma es neutra y muy usada.

Ejemplos:
- It is essential for him to attend the meeting.

Pasado subjuntivo: "were" para hipótesis y deseos irreales
- Para condicionales irreales y deseos en el presente se utiliza "were" con todos los sujetos en frases como "If I were..." o "I wish he were...".

Ejemplos:
- If I were you, I wouldn't do that. — Si yo fuera tú, no haría eso.
- I wish she were here.

- a requirement that
- a recommendation that
- a demand that
- an order that

Ejemplos:
- There is a requirement that applicants be fluent in English.
- The committee made a recommendation that the rules be changed.

- It is vital that, It is imperative that, It is important that

Ejemplos:
- It is imperative that every employee follow the safety rules.
- It is vital that the evidence be preserved. — Es vital que se preserve la evidencia.

Omisión de "that" y formas reducidas

I suggested she see a doctor." (en lugar de "I suggested that she see a doctor").

Ejemplos:
- I suggested she see a doctor. — Sugerí que ella viera a un médico.
- They recommended he apply for the scholarship. — Recomendaban que él solicitara la beca.

Subjuntivo vs. indicativo: significado distinto

- It is essential that he attend. (subjuntivo) expresa una obligación o recomendación.
- It is essential that he attends.

(subjuntivo)
- Inglés formal (US): "It is essential that he attend." (subjuntivo mandativo)
- Inglés informal o hablante no nativo a veces: "It is essential that he attends." (evítalo en escritura formal)

Errores frecuentes y cómo evitarlos

- Añadir "-s" en tercera persona: "It is essential that he attends" → incorrecto (uso del indicativo). Usa "attend".
- Usar "that he doesn't" o "that he doesn't attend" cuando necesitas subjuntivo: la forma correcta es "that he not attend" (o "that he shouldn't attend/that he should not attend" si empleas "should").
- Confundir el subjuntivo con construcciones con infinitivo: "It is essential for him to attend" es correcto pero tiene una construcción distinta; no es exactamente el mismo ritmo que "that he attend".
- Olvidar que "be" se mantiene en subjuntivo: "They insisted that he be promoted" (correcto) en lugar de "bees promoted" o "is promoted".

- The law requires that all vehicles be inspected annually.
- The contract provides that payment be made within 30 days.

- God save the Queen. — Dios salve a la Reina.
- Long live the King! — ¡Que viva el Rey!
- Heaven forbid. — ¡Que el cielo lo impida! / Ojalá que no.

Consejos prácticos para estudiantes

- Si escribes en un registro formal (ensayos, informes, correos oficiales en inglés americano), usa la forma base después de frases como "it is essential/important/vital that..." y después de verbos como "recommend/insist/demand/suggest/request".
- Si no estás seguro, puedes reformular con "It is essential for him to..." o usar "should" en inglés británico: "It is essential that he should...".
