Fare domande con le parole interrogative (who, what, where, when, why, how) al presente
A1Fare domande con le parole interrogative (who, what, where, when, why, how) al presente in inglese
Le "wh- questions" sono le domande informative in inglese: iniziano con parole come who, what, where, when, why, how. Servono a chiedere informazioni su persone, cose, luogo, tempo, motivo o modo.
- persona: who (chi)
- cosa/identità: what (che cosa / cosa)
- luogo: where (dove)
- tempo: when (quando)
- motivo: why (perché)
- modo/forma/quantità: how (come / quanto)
- scelta tra opzioni: which (quale)
- possesso: whose (di chi)
- oggetto formale: whom (chi, oggetto, oggi poco usato)
Parole interrogative principali: significato e esempi
- Who = chi (persona)
- "Who is that?" — Chi è quello?
- "Who called me?" — Chi mi ha chiamato?
- What = che cosa / cosa
- "What is this?" — Che cos'è questo?
- "What do you want?" — Cosa vuoi?
- Where = dove
- "Where do you live?" — Dove vivi?
- "Where is the bank?" — Dov'è la banca?
- When = quando
- "When do you start work?" — Quando inizi a lavorare?
- Why = perché (motivo)
- "Why are you late?" — Perché sei in ritardo?
- How = come / quanto (vari usi)
- "How are you?" — Come stai?
- "How do you go to work?" — Come vai al lavoro?
- How many / How much / How long / How often
- "How many books do you have?" — Quanti libri hai?
- "How much money do you need?" — Quanto denaro ti serve?
- "How long does it take?" — Quanto ci vuole? (durata)
- "How often do you exercise?" — Quanto spesso ti alleni?
- Which = quale (quando ci sono opzioni)
- "Which color do you prefer?" — Quale colore preferisci?
- Whose = di chi (possesso)
- "Whose phone is this?"
- "Whom did you invite?" (formale) / "Who did you invite?"
- Esempio: "Who lives here?"
- Auxiliary = do / does (present simple) o am / is / are (verbo to be) o un verbo modale (can, must, ecc.).
- Esempi:
- "What do you want?" — Cosa vuoi? (wh = oggetto)
- "Where does she work?" — Dove lavora lei?
Attenzione alla posizione del verbo "to be"
Con il verbo to be al presente (am / is / are) l'ordine è: Wh-word + be + subject + resto.
- "Where are the keys?" — Dove sono le chiavi?
- "Who is the teacher?" — Chi è l'insegnante?
Non si usa do/does con il verbo to be: è sbagliato dire *"Where do the keys are?"* — corretto: "Where are the keys?".
Formazione per i casi più comuni
1) Domande con il Present Simple (do / does)
- Subject: I / you / we / they -> do
- Subject: he / she / it -> does
Esempi:
- "What do you do?" — Che lavoro fai? / Cosa fai?
- "Where do they live?" — Dove vivono?
- "When does the train leave?" — Quando parte il treno?
- "What languages does he speak?" — Quali lingue parla?
Regola importante: con does il verbo principale resta alla forma base (no -s): *"What does he eat?"* (corretto) — NON "What does he eats?".
2) Domande con il verbo to be (am / is / are)
Struttura: Wh-word + am/is/are + subject + resto.
- "Who is she?" — Chi è lei?
- "Where are you?" — Dove sei?
- "Why is he unhappy?" — Perché è infelice?
Se la wh-word è soggetto, non si inverte: "Who is coming?" — Chi viene?
3) Domande con il Present Continuous (be + -ing)
Struttura: Wh-word + am/is/are + subject + verb-ing + resto.
- "What are you doing?" — Che cosa stai facendo?
- "Who is coming to the party?" — Chi viene alla festa?
- "Why are they laughing?" — Perché ridono?
4) Domande con i verbi modali (can, must, should...)
Struttura: Wh-word + modal + subject + base verb.
- "When can we meet?" — Quando possiamo incontrarci?
- "How can I help you?" — Come posso aiutarti?
5) How + aggettivo / How + avverbio / How many / How much
- How + aggettivo: "How old are you?" — Quanti anni hai?
- How + avverbio: "How often do you go?" — Quanto spesso vai?
- How many (countable): "How many students are there?" — Quanti studenti ci sono?
- How much (uncountable / price): "How much does it cost?" — Quanto costa?
6) Which, Whose, Whom
- Which = quale (quando scegli da opzioni): "Which bus goes to the station?" — Quale autobus va alla stazione?
- Whose = di chi (possesso): "Whose bag is this?" — Di chi è la borsa?
- Whom = oggetto formale (oggi raramente usato): "Whom did you see?" / comunemente "Who did you see?" — Chi hai visto?
Domande soggetto vs domande oggetto: differenza pratica
Domande soggetto
La wh-word è il soggetto dell'azione: si usa l'ordine normale (verbo dopo la wh-word) e NON si usa l'ausiliare do/does.
- "Who broke the window?" — Chi ha rotto la finestra? (who = soggetto)
- "What happened?" — Cosa è successo?
Domande oggetto
La wh-word è l'oggetto dell'azione: occorre do/does (o altro ausiliare) e inversione soggetto-verbo.
- "Who did you call?" / "Whom did you call?" — Chi hai chiamato?
- "What did she say?"
Domande indirette (embedded questions) — breve nota
- Diretto: "Where is the bank?" — Dov'è la banca?
- Indiretto: "Can you tell me where the bank is?" — Puoi dirmi dov'è la banca?
Corretto: "Do you know when the train leaves?" — Sbagliato: *"Do you know when does the train leave?"*.
Errori comuni da evitare
- Errore: dimenticare do/does nelle domande oggetto.
- *Wrong:* "What you want?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "What do you want?" — Cosa vuoi?
- Errore: usare does + s sul verbo principale.
- *Wrong:* "What does he eats?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "What does he eat?" — Cosa mangia?
- Errore: usare do con il verbo to be.
- *Wrong:* "Where do they are?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "Where are they?" — Dove sono?
- Errore: confondere how many / how much.
- *Wrong:* "How much apples do you have?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "How many apples do you have?" — Quante mele hai?
- Errore: ordine sbagliato nelle domande indirette.
- *Wrong:* "Can you tell me where is the station?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "Can you tell me where the station is?"
- *Wrong:* "Which is your name?" — *Wrong*
- Correct: "What is your name?" — Come ti chiami?
Suggerimenti pratici e consigli per lo studio
- Individua prima cosa chiedi (persona, cosa, luogo, tempo, motivo, modo) e scegli la wh-word giusta.
- Controlla il verbo: è "to be"? allora inverte be e soggetto (no do/does). È present simple? probabilmente serve do/does (tranne se wh-word è soggetto).
- Con i verbi modali (can, must, should) metti il modale prima del soggetto: "How can I help?".
Glossario breve
- wh-word: parola interrogativa che inizia la domanda (who, what, where, ...).
- auxiliary (ausiliare): verbo che aiuta a formare la domanda (do/does, am/is/are, modals).
- subject (soggetto): chi compie l'azione.
- object (oggetto): chi o cosa riceve l'azione.
- do-support: uso di do/does per formare domande nel present simple quando non c'è altro ausiliare.
Se vuoi, posso riassumere le regole in schemi pratici o darti altri esempi mirati (ad es. solo domande con "how" o con verbi modali).
