Esempi rapidi:
- "Did you call your mother yesterday?" (Hai chiamato tua madre ieri?)
- "He wasn't at home last night."
- Forma negativa: Subject + did not (didn't) + forma base del verbo.
Esempi
- "I didn't see him yesterday." (Non l'ho visto ieri.)
- "You didn't go to school." (Non sei andato a scuola.)
- "He didn't like the movie." (Il film non gli è piaciuto.)
- "We didn't understand the instructions." (Non abbiamo capito le istruzioni.)
- "They didn't win the match." (Non hanno vinto la partita.)
Domande con parole interrogative
- "Why didn't you come to the party?" (Perché non sei venuto alla festa?)
- "When did they arrive?" (Quando sono arrivati?) — notare: "did" + forma base: "arrive" (non "arrived").
- Per il verbo be NON si usa "did". Si mette "not" dopo was/were.
- Negativa: Subject + was not (wasn't) / were not (weren't) + complemento.
- Domanda: Was/Were + subject + complemento?
Esempi
- "I wasn't at home yesterday." (Non ero a casa ieri.)
- "She wasn't happy." (Non era felice.)
- "They weren't ready." (Non erano pronti.)
- "Was he at the office?" (Era in ufficio?)
- "Were you late?" (Sei stato in ritardo?)
- Forma negativa: Subject + was/were + not + verbo-ing (es. was not working / weren't working).
- Domanda: Was/Were + subject + verbo-ing?
Esempi
- "I wasn't watching TV when you called."
- "Was she sleeping at 10 pm?" (Stava dormendo alle 22:00?)
- "They weren't playing football because it rained." (Non stavano giocando a calcio perché pioveva.)
- Negativa: Subject + had not (hadn't) + past participle.
- Domanda: Had + subject + past participle?
Esempi
- "I hadn't seen that movie before." (Non avevo visto quel film prima.)
- "Had they left when you arrived?" (Erano già partiti quando sei arrivato?)
- "She had not finished her homework."
Nelle negative e nelle domande è molto comune usare comunque l'ausiliare "did":
- Negativa: I didn't have a car. (Non avevo un'auto.)
- Domanda: Did you have time? (Hai avuto tempo?)
- Forma alternativa più formale/antica: "I hadn't any money." o "Had you a car?" (meno comune nell'inglese parlato moderno).
Esempi
- "I didn't have time to call." (Non ho avuto tempo di chiamare.)
- "Did she have breakfast?" (Ha fatto colazione?)
- Affermazione: Subject + used to + verbo base (I used to play).
- Negativa e interrogativa usando "did":
- Negativa: Subject + didn't + use to + verbo base (I didn't use to play).
- Domanda: Did + subject + use to + verbo base? (Did you use to live here?)
- Nota: si usa "use" (forma base) dopo "did".
Esempi
- "I used to smoke, but I quit." (Fumavo, ma ho smesso.)
- "I didn't use to eat vegetables." (Non mangiavo le verdure.)
- "Did you use to play football as a child?" (Giocavi a calcio da bambino?)
- Per esprimere abilità nel passato: "could" (I could swim when I was five) / negativa "couldn't" / domanda "Could you...?".
- "I could swim when I was five." (Potevo nuotare a cinque anni.)
- "I couldn't open the door." (Non riuscivo ad aprire la porta.)
- "Could you lift this box?" (Riuscivi a sollevare questa scatola?)
- Per obbligo passato: si usa "had to" (I had to study). Negativa: "I didn't have to" (non ero obbligato, non ho dovuto).
- "I had to go to work." (Ho dovuto andare al lavoro.)
- "I didn't have to work yesterday." (Ieri non ho dovuto lavorare.)
- Per fare deduzioni sul passato si usano i perfect modals: "must have", "might have", "should have", "could have".
- Negativa: "couldn't have" / "must not have" / "shouldn't have" ecc.
- Domanda: "Could he have left so early?"
Esempi:
- "He must have forgotten the meeting." (Deve aver dimenticato la riunione.)
- "He couldn't have known." (Non poteva saperlo.)
- "Shouldn't they have told us earlier?"
- Struttura: Did + subject + forma base del verbo + ?
Esempi
- "Did you see Mary?" (Hai visto Mary?)
- "Did they finish the work?" (Hanno finito il lavoro?)
- "When did you arrive?" (Quando sei arrivato?)
- "What did he say?" (Cosa ha detto?)
Risposte brevi
- Alla domanda "Did you see Mary?" si risponde: "Yes, I did." / "No, I didn't." (Sì, l'ho vista. / No, non l'ho vista.)
- Inversione: Was/Were + subject + complemento?
Esempi
- "Was he at home?" (Era a casa?) — "Yes, he was." / "No, he wasn't."
- "Were they happy with the results?" (Erano contenti dei risultati?)
- Was/Were + subject + verbo-ing?
Esempi
- "Was she studying when you called?" (Stava studiando quando hai chiamato?)
- "What were you doing at 9 pm?" (Cosa stavi facendo alle 21:00?)
- Had + subject + past participle?
Esempi
- "Had you eaten before the meeting?" (Avevi mangiato prima della riunione?)
- "Had they already left by the time we arrived?" (Erano già partiti quando siamo arrivati?)
Domande negative, tag questions e risposte brevi
- Le domande negative (es. "Didn't you go?") spesso esprimono sorpresa, controllo o aspettativa.
Esempi
- "Didn't you see the email?" (Non hai visto l'email?) — spesso implica "Pensavo che l'avessi vista." (aspettativa)
- "Wasn't she invited?" (Non era invitata?)
Attenzione alle risposte brevi
- Se qualcuno chiede: "Didn't you call your friend?" e tu rispondi: "Yes." Per evitare ambiguità è meglio rispondere in forma completa: "No, I didn't call him." (No, non l'ho chiamato.) o "Yes, I did call him."
Esempi
- "You didn't like the film, did you?" (Non ti è piaciuto il film, vero?)
- "She was at the party, wasn't she?" (Era alla festa, vero?)
- "They had already left, hadn't they?" (Erano già partiti, vero?)
Errori comuni da evitare
- "Don't usare 'did' con il verbo be":
- Errato: "Did you were at home?" — Corretto: "Were you at home?" (Esempio: "Were you at home last night?" — "Eri a casa ieri sera?")
- "Non aggiungere -ed dopo did":
- Errato: "She didn't went to school." — Corretto: "She didn't go to school." (Lei non è andata a scuola.)
- "Confondere had/ did con il past perfect":
- Errato: "Did you finished?" — Corretto per past simple: "Did you finish?"; per past perfect: "Had you finished?"
- "Negazioni doppi (double negative) in inglese standard":
- Errato: "I didn't see nothing." — Corretto: "I didn't see anything." (Non ho visto niente.)
- "Used to": evitare "usedn't to" nell'inglese moderno; preferire "didn't use to".
- Errato: "I usedn't to like coffee." — Corretto: "I didn't use to like coffee." o "I used not to like coffee." (meno comune)
- "'Have' come ausiliare vs 'have' come verbo di possesso":
- Per il present perfect si usa "have/has" come ausiliare: "Have you eaten?". Per il passato semplice di possesso si preferisce: "Did you have a car?" (Non: "Did you had a car?").
