Uso dei phrasal verbs comuni (verbi inglesi di due parole di uso quotidiano)

A2

Che cosa sono i phrasal verbs?

I phrasal verbs sono verbi inglesi composti da un verbo principale + una o più particelle (un avverbio o una preposizione). Insieme queste parti spesso formano un significato che può essere diverso dal significato letterale del verbo da solo.

Esempi semplici:
"I wake up at 7." (Mi sveglio alle 7.) — wake up = svegliarsi
"Please turn off the light." (Per favore spegni la luce.) — turn off = spegnere
"She looks after her brother." (Lei si prende cura del fratello.) — look after = prendersi cura

I phrasal verbs sono molto comuni nell'inglese parlato e in molte espressioni quotidiane.

Quando e perché si usano?

- Sono frequenti nel parlato informale e nella lingua quotidiana. In testi formali si tende a usare verbi più "latini" (es. "investigate" invece di "look into").
- Spesso rendono il linguaggio più naturale e conciso: "give up" è più comune di "stop trying" in conversazioni informali.
- Molti verbi comuni hanno più phrasal verbs con significati diversi (es. "take off" = togliersi i vestiti, "take off" = decollare (aereo)).

Come si formano? Particelle e preposizioni

I phrasal verbs possono essere:
- verbo + avverbio (particle): "wake up", "give up".
- verbo + preposizione (prepositional verb): "look after", "rely on".
- verbo + avverbio + preposizione (three-word phrasal verb): "put up with", "look forward to".

Differenza tra particle e preposizione
La particle (spesso chiamata "adverbial particle") fa parte del verbo e può cambiare il suo significato in modo idiomatico. Una vera preposizione collega il verbo a un oggetto e richiede un complemento.

Test pratico: se puoi inserire un oggetto tra verbo e parola successiva, probabilmente è un phrasal verb separabile; se l'oggetto deve seguire tutta la costruzione, è probabile che si tratti di una preposizione (inseparabile).

Esempio:
"Turn off the radio." (Spegnere la radio.) — verbo + particle, separabile: puoi dire "Turn the radio off." o "Turn it off." ("Turn off it" è sbagliato.)
"Look after the baby." (Prendersi cura del bambino.) — inseparabile: *"Look the baby after" è sbagliato.

Transitivo vs intransitivo

- Transitivo: richiede un complemento diretto. Es.: "She picked up the book." (Ha raccolto il libro.)
- Intransitivo: non richiede complemento. Es.: "The car broke down." (La macchina si è guastata.)

Alcuni phrasal verbs possono essere sia transitivi che intransitivi, con significati diversi:
"break down":
- Intransitivo: "The car broke down." (Si è guastata.)
- Transitivo (separabile): "Let's break the problem down." (Analizziamo il problema.)

Separabili e inseparabili (dove mettere l'oggetto)

Regole essenziali:
- Se il phrasal verb è separabile e l'oggetto è un sostantivo, puoi mettere l'oggetto o dopo la particella o tra il verbo e la particella:
"Turn off the light." / "Turn the light off." (Entrambe corrette.)
- Se l'oggetto è un pronome (it, them, him, her), deve andare sempre tra verbo e particella:
"Turn it off." (Corretto) — "Turn off it." (Sbagliato)
- Se il phrasal verb è inseparabile (o è un three-word phrasal verb), l'oggetto segue sempre tutta la costruzione:
"Look after your sister." — *"Look your sister after" (sbagliato)
"I look forward to the weekend." — *"I look the weekend forward to" (sbagliato)

Esempi pratici:
"Pick up the kids." / "Pick the kids up." — oggetto sostantivo, separabile.
"Pick them up." — oggetto pronome, deve stare tra verbo e particella.
"Put up with the noise." — three-word, inseparabile: "She puts up with the noise." (Lei sopporta il rumore.)

Tempi, passiva e modali

I phrasal verbs si coniugano come verbi normali nei tempi e nei modi:
"I turn on the TV." / "She turned on the TV." / "They have turned off the heater." / "I will pick you up."

Passiva: molti phrasal verbs transitivi possono essere messi alla voce passiva, ma l'ordine delle parole può cambiare:
"They turned off the lights." → "The lights were turned off." (Le luci sono state spente.)
"She looked after the children." → "The children were looked after (by her)." (I bambini sono stati accuditi.)

Con modali: "You must give up smoking." (Devi smettere di fumare.)

Errori comuni da evitare

- Tradurre letteralmente dall'italiano: spesso il significato è idiomatico. Es.: "make up" non significa solo "fare su" ma "riconciliarsi" o "inventare" a seconda del contesto.
- Posizione del pronome: per i separabili usa sempre il pronome tra verbo e particella: "Turn it off." (non "Turn off it").
- Separare un inseparabile: *"Look the baby after" è sbagliato; si dice "Look after the baby."
- Gerundio dopo "look forward to": dopo "to" in questo caso si usa il gerundio, non l'infinito: "I look forward to meeting you." (Corretto) — *"I look forward to meet you." (Sbagliato)
- Confondere phrasal verbs simili: "bring up" = menzionare; "bring back" = restituire o far ricordare.
- Usarli in contesti troppo formali: in scritti molto formali è preferibile usare equivalenti più formali (es. "investigate" per "look into").

Glossario (termini utili)

Particle: parola avverbiale che si unisce al verbo per formare il phrasal verb (es. up, off, out).
Preposizione: parola che collega il verbo a un complemento e richiede un oggetto (es. after, with, to).
Transitivo: verbo che richiede un oggetto.
Intransitivo: verbo che non richiede un oggetto.
Separabile: si può mettere l'oggetto tra verbo e particella (per lo più con sostantivi).
Inseparabile: l'oggetto deve seguire l'intero phrasal verb.
