Esempio generale (attivo → passivo):
- Active: Someone cleans the room. — "Qualcuno pulisce la stanza."
- Passive: The room is cleaned. — "La stanza viene pulita / La stanza è pulita."

  • The medicine was invented in 1928. — "La medicina è stata inventata nel 1928." (Importa il risultato, non chi ha inventato.)
Quando l'agente è sconosciuto, irrilevante o ovvio
  • My bike was stolen. — "La mia bicicletta è stata rubata." (Non si specifica chi l'ha rubata.)
Nello stile formale, tecnico o scientifico
  • The samples are heated to 100°C.
  • The decision was made.

Regola generale
  • Forma base: be + past participle (II forma o participio passato).
  • Esempio presente semplice: is/are + past participle → The report is sent every morning.
  • Esempio passato semplice: was/were + past participle → The report was sent yesterday.

Verbi intransitivi come "arrive" o "sleep" non formano la passiva: *She was arrived è sbagliato; si dice semplicemente "She arrived."

*was wrote è sbagliato; corretto: was written).

Tempi presenti: formazione e esempi

Present simple passive (am / is / are + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + am/is/are + past participle.
  • Examples:
  • The cake is baked every morning. — "La torta viene preparata ogni mattina."
  • These letters are sent by the office. — "Queste lettere sono/inviate dall'ufficio."
  • The museum is closed on Mondays. — "Il museo è chiuso il lunedì."
Present continuous passive (am / is / are being + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + am/is/are being + past participle (azione in corso ora o in un periodo attuale).
  • Examples:
  • The house is being painted.
  • Customers are being served at the counter. — "I clienti vengono serviti allo sportello."
Present perfect passive (has / have been + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + has/have been + past participle (azione completata con risultato attuale).
  • Examples:
  • The documents have been signed. — "I documenti sono stati firmati."
  • The work has been finished. — "Il lavoro è stato completato."

Tempi passati: formazione e esempi

Past simple passive (was / were + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + was/were + past participle.
  • Examples:
  • The window was broken yesterday. — "La finestra è stata rotta ieri."
  • The letters were delivered at noon. — "Le lettere sono state consegnate a mezzogiorno."
Past continuous passive (was / were being + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + was/were being + past participle (azione passiva in progresso nel passato).
  • Examples:
  • The road was being repaired last week. — "La strada veniva riparata la settimana scorsa."
  • The students were being tested when I arrived.
Past perfect passive (had been + past participle)
  • Structure: Subject + had been + past participle (azione completata prima di un altro evento passato).
  • Examples:
  • The homework had been done before class. — "I compiti erano stati fatti prima della lezione."
  • The building had been damaged by the storm. — "L'edificio era stato danneggiato dalla tempesta."

Agente, omissione dell'agente e strumenti

Indicare l'agente con "by"
  • The book was written by George Orwell.
  • The cake was baked by my sister.
  • The keys were found. — "Le chiavi sono state trovate." (Non serve il "by someone".)
Strumenti con "with"
  • Per indicare lo strumento si può usare "with" invece di "by".
  • The window was broken with a stone.

Negativa (present e past)
  • Present simple negative: The letters are not sent on Sundays. — "Le lettere non vengono inviate la domenica."
  • Past simple negative: The package was not delivered. — "Il pacco non è stato consegnato."
  • Present continuous negative: The film is not being shown tonight. — "Il film non viene proiettato stasera."
Interrogativa (present e past)
  • Present simple question: Is the report ready? — "Il rapporto è pronto?"
  • Past simple question: Were the results published? — "I risultati sono stati pubblicati?"
  • Present continuous question: Is the house being cleaned? — "La casa viene pulita?"
Risposte brevi
  • Q: Was the letter sent? — A: Yes, it was. / No, it wasn't. — "Sì, lo era. / No, non lo era."
  • Q: Are the rooms cleaned? — A: Yes, they are. / No, they aren't. — "Sì, lo sono. / No, non lo sono."

Errori comuni e consigli pratici

1) Uso di verbi intransitivi
  • Non puoi trasformare in passiva verbi senza oggetto: *He was arrived. → sbagliato.
2) Forma errata del participio passato
  • Errore: *The book was wrote by her. → Corretto: The book was written by her.
  • Alcuni participi irregolari utili: write → written; break → broken; eat → eaten; take → taken; see → seen; do → done.
3) Concordanza soggetto-verbo
  • Usa am/is/are e was/were secondo il soggetto: "The list is" (singolare) vs "The lists are" (plurale).
4) Evitare "has/have been being"
  • Forme come "has been being repaired" sono grammaticalmente possibili ma molto rare e scomode. Meglio riformulare: "has been repaired" o "has been under repair".

"write a letter"). Solo questi possono diventare passivi.
