Bijvoorbeeld:

Direct: "I like pizza," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) he liked pizza.

Reporting verb
- Veelgebruikte werkwoorden: say, tell, ask, explain, promise, offer, reply.
- Gebruik "tell" met een indirect object: He told me that... (niet: He said me...)

- Present simple -> past simple
- Present continuous -> past continuous
- Present perfect -> past perfect
- Past simple -> past perfect
- Will -> would
- Can -> could
- May -> might
- Must -> had to (meestal)

Voornaamwoorden en tijd/plaatswoorden veranderen
- I -> he/she/they
- we -> they
- you -> I/he/she/they (afhankelijk van wie bedoeld is)
- this -> that, these -> those
- now -> then, today -> that day, yesterday -> the day before, tomorrow -> the next day, here -> there

Hoe rapporteer je mededelingen (statements)?

Stappen:
1. Kies het reporting verb (said/told/explained).
2. Verwijder aanhalingstekens en voeg eventueel "that" toe bij statements.
3. Pas voornaamwoorden en tijd/plaatswoorden aan.

1) Present simple -> past simple
Direct: "I live in London," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she lived in London.

2) Present continuous -> past continuous
Direct: "I am studying now," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) he was studying then.

3) Present perfect -> past perfect
Direct: "I have finished the work," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she had finished the work.

4) Past simple -> past perfect
Direct: "I bought a new car yesterday," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) he had bought a new car the day before.

5) Will -> would
Direct: "I will call you tomorrow," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she would call me the next day.

6) Can -> could
Direct: "I can help you," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) he could help me.
Vertaling: Hij zei dat hij me kon helpen.

7) Must (verplichting) -> had to
Direct: "You must finish your homework," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) I had to finish my homework.

8) "Be going to" (toekomst gepland) volgt backshift:
Direct: "I'm going to start next week," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she was going to start the following week.

- should, could, would, might blijven vaak hetzelfde in de indirecte rede.
Direct: "You should rest." -> He said I should rest.
- must verandert meestal in had to wanneer het om verplichting gaat. Als "must" een logische conclusie uitdrukt (deduction), blijft het soms must:
Direct (verplichting): "You must stop now." -> He said I had to stop then.
Direct (conclusie): "She must be at home." -> He said she must be at home. (behouden)

Wijziging van tijd en plaatswoorden (veelvoorkomende vervangingen)

- now -> then
- today -> that day
- tonight -> that night
- yesterday -> the day before / the previous day
- tomorrow -> the next day / the following day
- last week -> the week before / the previous week
- next week -> the following week / the week after
- here -> there
- this -> that
- these -> those

Voorbeelden:
Direct: "I will come tomorrow," he said.
Indirect: He said (that) he would come the next day.

Direct: "I live here," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she lived there.

Direct: "I met him yesterday," she said.
Indirect: She said (that) she had met him the day before.

Hoe rapporteer je vragen? (yes/no- en wh-questions)

Algemene verschillen met statements:
- Bij vragen gebruik je meestal "ask" (of verbs zoals want to know, wonder).
- Ja/nee-vragen (yes/no): gebruik if of whether + normale woordvolgorde (subject + verb), geen omkering.
- Wh-vragen (who/what/where/when/why/how): begin met het wh-woord, daarna normale woordvolgorde (subject + verb).

Yes/no-vragen
Direct: "Are you coming?" he asked.
Indirect: He asked if/whether I was coming.

Direct: "Did you finish the report?" she asked.
Indirect: She asked if/whether I had finished the report.

Let op: both "if" and "whether" zijn mogelijk; "whether or not" wordt gebruikt als "of niet" expliciet vermeld moet worden.

Wh-vragen
Direct: "Where do you live?" she asked.
Indirect: She asked where I lived.

Direct: "What did he say?" he asked.
Indirect: He asked what he had said.

Direct: "Who broke the window?" they asked.
Indirect: They asked who had broken the window.

Woordsvolgorde bij gerapporteerde vragen
- Nooit de vraagwoordvolgorde (auxiliary + subject) gebruiken. Fout: He asked why did you leave. Juist: He asked why I had left.

Direct: "Could you close the window?" she asked.
Indirect (verzoek): She asked me to close the window.

Direct: "Will you help me?" he asked.
Indirect (verzoek): He asked me to help him. (of: He asked if I would help him.)

Direct: "Would you like some tea?" she asked.
Indirect (aanbod): She offered me some tea. (meer natuurlijk dan: She asked if I would like some tea.)

Wanneer verander je geen tijden (geen backshift)?

- Als het reporting verb in de tegenwoordige tijd staat: She says, He argues, They explain. Bijvoorbeeld:
Direct: "I live in Rome," she says.
Indirect: She says she lives in Rome.

Direct: "Water boils at 100°C," he said.
Indirect: He said that water boils at 100°C.

Fout: He asked why did you leave.
Juist: He asked why I had left.

2) Gebruik van "say" met een indirect object
Fout: He said me he was tired.
Juist: He told me he was tired. (of: He said to me that he was tired.)

3) Vergeten tijd/plaatswoorden te veranderen
Fout: He said he would come tomorrow. (wanneer je rapporteert op een later tijdstip)
Juist: He said he would come the next day.

Fout: Direct: "I can do it," -> Indirect: He said he can do it. (als reporting verb in past)
Juist: He said he could do it.

5) Dubbele "that that" vermijden (kan technisch correct zijn maar klinkt onhandig)
Direct: "This is my bag," he said.
Indirect (onnatuurlijk): He said that that was his bag.
Beter: He said it was his bag. (of: He said that it was his bag.)

Andere reporting verbs — korte referentie

- say: algemene rapportage (He said (that) ...)
- tell: met indirect object (He told me (that) ...)
- ask: voor vragen (He asked if/whether ... / He asked me ...)
- explain: legt iets uit (She explained that ...)
- reply/answer: antwoord (He replied that ... / He answered that ...)
- promise: belofte (She promised (that) she would ...)
- offer: aanbod (He offered to help.)

Voorbeeld met verschillende reporting verbs:
Direct: "I will help you," he said.
Indirect: He promised (that) he would help me.

Direct: "Do you want coffee?" she asked.
Indirect: She asked if I wanted coffee. (of: She offered me coffee.)

Korte samenvatting — belangrijkste regels

- Verwijder aanhalingstekens en gebruik een reporting verb (said/told/asked).
- Pas voornaamwoorden en aanwijzende woorden (this/that/here/there) aan.
- Bij ja/nee-vragen: gebruik if/whether + normale woordvolgorde.
- Voor verzoeken: vaak reported infinitive: asked someone to do something.

Glossarium (kort)

- Direct speech (letterlijke rede): iemands exacte woorden tussen aanhalingstekens. Bijvoorbeeld: "I am hungry."
- Indirect speech / indirecte rede: woorden weergeven zonder aanhalingstekens, vaak met "that".
- Wh-question: vraag die begint met who/what/where/when/why/how.
