Expressar contraste e concessão (despite, in spite of, even though)
B2Expressar contraste e concessão em inglês: despite, in spite of, even though
- despite / in spite of (preposições; seguem um sintagma nominal ou -ing)
- even though / although / though (conjunções; ligam orações completas)
- even if (condicional/hipotético — contraste com even though)
Forma e estrutura: como usar cada um
- Natureza: são preposições.
- Estrutura: Despite / In spite of + noun phrase (sintagma nominal) OR + gerund (–ing) OR + the fact that + clause.
- Exemplos:
- Despite the rain, we went out. — (Apesar da chuva, saímos.)
- In spite of the bad weather, the match continued. — (Apesar do mau tempo, a partida continuou.)
- Despite being tired, she finished the report. — (Apesar de estar cansada, ela terminou o relatório.)
- In spite of his injury, he played. — (Apesar da lesão, ele jogou.)
- Despite the fact that he was ill, he went to work.
Use despite + noun ou in spite of + noun.
- Para introduzir uma oração com sujeito e verbo depois de despite, o inglês frequentemente usa: despite the fact that + clause. Ex.: Despite the fact that she was busy, she helped us.
- Estrutura: Even though / Although / Though + subject + verb (clause).
- Exemplos:
- Even though it was raining, we walked to the café.
- Although he is young, he is very experienced. — (Embora seja jovem, ele é muito experiente.)
- She kept working even though she was tired.
- Estrutura: Even if + subject + verb.
- Exemplo e contraste:
- Even if it rains, I will go to the beach. — (Mesmo que chova, eu irei à praia.) — condicional/hipotético
- Even though it rained, I went to the beach.
Regras e detalhes importantes
- After a preposition (como despite / in spite of) espera-se um sintagma nominal: noun, pronoun, gerúndio (–ing) ou uma expressão nominalizada (the fact that + clause).
- Correcto: Despite the delay; Despite his absence; Despite being late.
- Incorrecto: *Despite he was late.* (Errado)
Possessivo antes do gerúndio
- Despite his being late (formal) — (Apesar de ele ter chegado atrasado.)
- Despite him being late (informal, muito usado na fala)
- Outra alternativa: Even though he was late / Despite the fact that he was late.
- Dica: se estiver em dúvida, use even though + clause ou despite the fact that + clause para evitar ambiguidade.
- Quando a oração subordinada vem antes, normalmente usamos vírgula: Even though it was late, we continued.
We continued even though it was late. (Sem vírgula) / We continued, even though it was late. (Com vírgula, ênfase)
- Para despite / in spite of: se a expressão inicial for longa ou enfática, use vírgula: Despite the heavy snow, the airport stayed open.
Ex.: Despite the problems, we succeeded. / In spite of the problems, we succeeded.
- He passed the exam even though he didn't study.
- Although he didn't study, he passed the exam.
- Even though: refere-se a factos reais; a concessão afirma que a condição existiu.
- Even if: refere-se a hipóteses; é condicional.
- Even though she was tired, she finished the race. — (Ela estava cansada — facto — mas terminou.)
- Even if she were tired, she would still try.

- Se precisa ligar duas orações (sujeito + verbo) e quer enfatizar a concessão, use even though / although. Ex.: Even though he was tired, he continued.
- Se tem uma expressão curta (nome, pronome ou -ing), use despite / in spite of. Ex.: Despite the noise, I slept.
- Para evitar erros com preposições seguidas de orações, prefira: even though + clause OU despite the fact that + clause.
- Memorize a diferença entre even though (facto) e even if (hipótese).
Ex.: "Even though she was late, she apologized." → "Despite being late, she apologized."
