Expressar o grau superlativo (the + -est ou 'most')

- Acrescentando -est ao adjetivo + o artigo definido the (por exemplo: the tallest).
- Usando the + most + adjetivo (por exemplo: the most beautiful).

- The tallest building in the city. (O edifício mais alto da cidade.)
- She is the most experienced teacher here. (Ela é a professora mais experiente aqui.)
- This is the least expensive option.

Se tiver dúvida, usar most é quase sempre seguro.
Adjetivos de 1 sílaba
Regra: acrescenta-se -est.
  • tall → the tallest (Ele é o jogador mais alto.)
  • fast → the fastest (Ela é a corredora mais rápida.)

  • clever → the cleverest (Ele é o aluno mais inteligente.)
  • narrow → the narrowest (Esta é a rua mais estreita.)
  • simple → the simplest (Escolha a opção mais simples.)

- careful → the most careful (Seja o mais cuidadoso ao atravessar a rua.)
- pleasant → the most pleasant (Foi a tarde mais agradável.)
- modern → the most modern (O prédio mais moderno)

Regra: usar the + most + adjetivo.
  • beautiful → the most beautiful (Ela é a mulher mais bonita na sala.)
  • interesting → the most interesting (Este é o livro mais interessante que já li.)
  • comfortable → the most comfortable (Este sofá é o mais confortável.)
Regras ortográficas importantes (resumo)
  • Termina em -e: drop the e + -st → nice → nicest.
  • Termina em consoante-vogal-consoante (CVC): dobrar a consoante final + -est → big → biggest.
  • Termina em -y (precedido por consoante): y → i + -est → happy → happiest; dry → driest.
  • Termina em w, x, y: NÃO dobrar: low → lowest; box → boxiest.
Formas irregulares (exceções importantes)
Alguns adjetivos têm superlativos irregulares e precisam ser memorizados:
  • good → the best (bom → o melhor)
  • He is the best player on the team. (Ele é o melhor jogador do time/equipa.)
  • bad → the worst (mau → o pior)
  • That was the worst day of my life.
  • far → the farthest / the furthest (distância física → farthest; sentido figurado → furthest, embora muito uso seja intercambiável)
  • This is the farthest point. (Este é o ponto mais distante.)
  • She took the argument the furthest. (Ela levou o argumento mais longe.)
  • little → the least (pouco → o menos)
  • She drank the least. (Ela bebeu menos.)
  • much/many → the most (muito / muitos → o mais)
  • He has the most books. (Ele tem mais livros.)
  • old → the oldest / the eldest (oldest é geral; eldest é usado especialmente para irmãos/ordem de nascimento)
  • He is the oldest person in the group. (Ele é a pessoa mais velha do grupo.)
  • She is the eldest of the three sisters.
  • quickly → the most quickly (Ela resolveu o problema mais rapidamente.)
  • carefully → the most carefully (O engenheiro trabalhou com mais cuidado.)
  • fast → the fastest (Ele correu o mais rápido.)
  • early → the earliest (Chegou o mais cedo.)
  • Irregular: well → the best (She sings best / She sings the best. — Ela canta melhor / Ela canta o melhor.)
Posicionamento e uso (the, of, in, my...)
  • Normalmente usamos o artigo definido the antes do superlativo: the tallest, the most expensive.
  • He is the tallest student in the class.
  • She is my oldest friend. (Ela é a minha amiga mais antiga.)
  • He is their youngest child. (Ele é o filho mais novo deles.)
  • Para indicar o grupo, usamos of ou in:
  • the biggest city in the country (a maior cidade do país)
  • the best of the three options (a melhor das três opções)
Erros comuns e como evitá‑los
  • Erro: the most tallest. Correção: the tallest.
  • Errado: He is the most tallest boy.
  • Certo: He is the tallest boy.
  • Erro: beautifullest / interessentest. Correção: the most beautiful / the most interesting.
  • Erro: usar -est com adjetivos de 3+ sílabas. Correção: usar most + adjective.
  • Erro: esquecer de trocar y → i (happy → *happyest). Correção: happiest.
  • Erro: omitir 'the' quando necessário: "She is tallest of the class." → correto: "She is the tallest in the class." (ou "She is the tallest of the class.")
  • Dica: conte as sílabas.
  • Quando em dúvida, use "the most + adjective" — é quase sempre correto.
  • Memorize os irregulares (best, worst, least, most, farthest/furthest, eldest/oldest).
  • Não escreva "more + -est" (ex.: *more tallest) — isso é incorreto.
